EIPI Lab
Evolutionary Intelligence for Science and Engineering
EIPI Lab is a research team at South China University of Technology, led by Prof. Jinghui Zhong. The team brings together a professor, a postdoctoral researcher, doctoral and master's students, and undergraduate researchers. We work on evolutionary computation and combine it with machine learning and large language models. Our topics include genetic programming and symbolic regression, evolutionary multitasking, intelligent optimization, and multimodal decision-making. We aim to build interpretable models and efficient algorithms for scientific discovery and engineering, and to turn them into systems that run in industry.
Research
Our research has four directions. Read more about our research and industry projects.
- Intelligent Decision-Making. Large language models fuse multimodal information to plan tasks, assess risk, and support decisions in complex scenes.
- Intelligent Perception. Deep learning and reinforcement learning give machines the ability to recognize speech, objects, defects, and anomalies.
- Intelligent Optimization. Efficient algorithms solve NP-hard scheduling and expensive black-box problems. Symbolic regression and genetic programming support knowledge discovery from data.
- Multi-Agent Simulation. Agent-based models simulate large complex systems, such as crowds in airports and other public spaces.
Industry Collaboration
We work with leading companies and institutions to bring our algorithms into practice. Current projects cover embodied robots, smart buildings, crowd management in airports, rural decision support, industrial quality inspection, elevator safety, and hospital infusion monitoring. Partners include Midea Group (美的集团), Guangdong Airport Authority (广东省机场管理集团), Digital Guangdong (数字广东), and Amicro (一微科技).
Honors
Awards of the group leader, Prof. Jinghui Zhong:
- IEEE TETCI Outstanding Paper Award, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, 2023
- Outstanding Industry-Academia Collaboration Case, KylinSoft, 2024
- Natural Science Award (First Class), Ministry of Education, 2010
The group has won four international competition championships, including events at IEEE WCCI and ACM GECCO.
